On March 10th, 2010 the Major League Baseball career of Nomar Garciaparra ends with the signing of a one-day minor league deal. That signing will allow Nomar to end his career like he started it, as a member of the Boston Red Sox. If Nomar could have maintained his career the way he started it during his first 8 years, we may be talking about a plaque on the wall in Cooperstown. But combine his relatively short career with the plethora of even better world-class shortstops he played against (Alex Rodriguez, Miguel Tejada, Derek Jeter) and its not very likely. But he will always hold a few spots in the record books, including a great example for investors. Nomar was never a real power hitter. His 229 home runs puts him in 232nd place on the all-time list. And as investors we know that we are looking more for consistent singles and doubles than gigantic swings for the fences with every buy.
